Why Work “Environments” Influence Productivity

Desk with newspaperIf you want to develop a workspace that supports your goals and inspires higher levels of productivity start by removing the clutter and adding more meaningful “mental anchors” to your work environment.

Most entrepreneurial CEOs give little thought to how much a “workspace” can determine their personal productivity. But once you decide to construct a work environment that mentally “anchors” you in a positive way, you will start getting more done, faster, better and with less human effort.

Glossary: The “mental anchoring” of your workspace can have a powerful impact on your personal productivity by conditioning you to more supportive emotional states with visual triggers (like Pavlov did with auditory triggers linking food with the sound of a bell).

Alex, My light bulb in my head just went from 60 watts to 360 watts. What the heck have I been doing all this time. I am working on getting a teleseminar together for a “GREEN” product that will lower emmissions, improve fuel mileage and decrease wear and tear on any combustible engine and did I mention that we have opportunities for anyone that wants to create wealth for an eternity. The video will get the word out quicker and easier and just maybe, we will help the United States conserve energy.
Great 300 minute video. We should talk very soon.
    Best Regards,

    Alex,

Excellent tip. I’m looking at the same concept for businesses and the use of an intranet site. Not to be confused with internet, the intranet gives a business the tools to really organize their data, content, customers, and much more and be able to access it with a web connection, but in a secure way.
Exactly why I’m doing teleseminars on the subject.

    Alex, ‘I got it…Freedom!’

Thanks for your being you, with style. The mental anchors idea - like Feng Shui, and my various Buddhas, I’ll have to develop, and clarify. It’s trusting that intuitive inner you to pop out, huh?

    Alex,

Thanks for the photo tour of your desk…I, too, work out of a dedicated bedroom….in my case, my desk view is 6 computer screens including a 37″ hi def monitor in the middle that is a great productivity enhancer..with the same microphone, Ediral, Innkeeeper, headphones, and telephone amplifier you have…..for me, the view out my window is the Gulf of Mexico…with the sandy shoreline only 100 yards from my office…all of which gives me the positive, productive environment I need for action.

Instead of the wall countdown timer, I use a software solution that is freeware called 1Time. Your readers might find it useful. Just do a Google on “1Time software” and you can download it for free from multiple sites. You can even run multiple countdown and count up timers on the same computer…or in my case on multiple screens.

The implied urgency you gain from the countdown timer really does help focus efforts and productivity!

I also have a dedicated workspace in my bedroom. It is quiet and peaceful and I have been very productive since setting up this area a year ago. My ‘triggers’ include my atomic clock, my rock collection, and my TSS notebook.

Thanks for sharing Alex - I always wondered what your desk looked like!

Removing clutter from my home office is a “work in progress” - this post has motivated me to get back to my project. I also know that removing clutter from my environment will create new spaces for new things to come into my life.

    Thanks again,

    Alex,

I’m a teleseminarian that recently was awarded an office makeover. You can see from the quick photo link below that I’m in need of an office makeover.

Your post gave me the idea to submit and eventually led to my makeover.

    Thanks for idea.

    Thanks for sharing Alex.
Enjoyed the picture of your workspace. I have in a frame 5 most important things in my life. It helps me prioritize my time and focus when in front of the computer.

using a PC Alex? Well, i won’t hold it against you ;-) LOL.
I love that retro looking radio announcer’s mic!

I should really take a snapshot of my ‘home office’ workspace - to show what NOT to do. Anyone with ADD would probably laugh knowingly inside if they saw it.

The piles are growing! The piles are growing!
Seriously now, this is a great reminder to change one of our 9 environments to better suit our life.
    thank you!

Very true! Your environment plays a huge role in your productivity. I know there are sometimes weeks when my desk gets a little messy (I share one with my partner) and I find those weeks I don’t accomplish as much as I planned.

    Thanks for the reminder!
