We are definitely in the Generation Now and you have to be oblivious to believe that Social Media is not the new precedent in marketing.

  1. By 2010 Gen Y will outnumber Baby Boomers….96% of them have joined a social network
  2. Social Media has overtaken porn as the #1 activity on the Web
  3. One out of eight couples married in the U.S. last year met via social media
  4. Years to Reach 50 millions Users:  Radio (38 Years), TV (13 Years), Internet (4 Years), iPod (3 Years)…Facebook added 100 million users in less than 9 months…iPhone applications hit 1 billion in 9 months
  5. If Facebook were a country it would be the world’s 4th largest between the United States and Indonesia
  6. Yet, some sources say China’s QZone is larger with over 300 million using their services (Facebook’s ban in China plays into this)
  7. .comScore indicates that Russia has the most engage social media audience with visitors spending 6.6 hours and viewing 1,307 pages per visitor per month – Vkontakte.ru is the #1 social network

    Thanks for bringing this important topic up again. I don’t want to lose sight that we’re still in the womb of the “Innovation” Economy in which “Attention” and “Reputation” are more valuable currencies that money and “Interruption” is the default of most marketing communications.

  3. These statistics blew me away! I knew that social media was much more than a fad but had not realized how social media has really integrated the world to the point that it is a lifestyle. I would love to know more about the correlation between social media and finding jobs and would be interested in any resources any would recommend, as my mission to is help people in transition find their next best opportunity and even make money in the meantime. Thanks so much for sharing this!

  5. I’m not sure #34 is a correct assumption. Social media has brought amazing changes in a short period of time, and there’s nothing to say that in another decade, there may be another game changer.

    However, for today, there’s no denial that social media is important to our business.

  8. Those stats are simply amazing. I know that social marketing has indeed become a big player in the business world. Once I incorporated social marketing into my business model, my business and profits really took off.

    Not to mention the Old Spice social media campaign DOUBLED their sales. For major brands, even when it’s not incorporated with lead capture, results like these are going to become the rule rather than the exception.

  13. Would like to have read part 1 too but cannot find it on your blog.

    While using social media to brand and promote yourself or your site is obviously important it can take a lot of time unless you are outsourcing. I think a good start would be to choose 3 or 4 sites and concentrate on those.
