3 Marketing Lessons Learned From Geese
Entrepreneurs can learn a lot from geese. The next time you see geese fly overhead, take a closer look at “how” they fly and you’ll discover “why” they can fly farther, faster and with less effort.
Got 2 minutes, 17 seconds to spare right now? Grab your mouse, click on the picture below and watch this clever video.
As each goose flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the other geese that follow. By flying in a “V” formation the whole flock adds 71 percet of extra flying range.
Lesson #1: Entrepreneurs who build reliable teams, “vendor networks” and strategic alliances accelerate the growth of their businesses faster, better and with less effort.
When a goose falls out of formation it feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. Every goose quickly moves back into “V” formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the other geese in front.
Lesson #2: Entrepreneurs who willingly accept feedback from their target market accelerate the growth of their business faster, better and with less effort.
When the lead goose tires, it drops back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position. The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up with their speed.
Lesson #3: Entrepreneurs who “honk” at their team members and vendors with encouragement accelerate their personal productivity and business growth faster, better and with less effort.
When a goose gets sick, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to assist and protect it. Entrepreneurs who protect their their teams can grow their businesses even during economic downswings.

My sister referred me to this movie. After watching it for the 3rd time, it occurred to me that marketers can learn a lot from geese :-)
I hope you enjoyed the movie so much that you pass it on to a friend or colleague.

Hi Alex –
This movie is a great example of why I do not call my list my “list” – they are my community, and they are my community in two parts:
Community Part 1 – Those that follow and learn from me in the teacher-student roll, and
Community Part 2 – Those fellow entrepreneurs with whom I am on this great Internet Marketing journey..
This is a great movie clip for both communities, as “a rising tide lifts all boats.”
Thanks for the reminder brother!

Definitely entertaining and valuable info. I will pass this one along for sure. Thanks for sharing, Alex!
Thanks for your quality honking, Alex. Reminds me that we’re all in this together. Those geese aren’t competing with each other. They’re supporting each other so they ALL reach their intended destination.
Great message as we in the US start out with a new chief honker today.
Thanks for the inspiration!

Alex,
I loved the video. These teamwork lessons are transferable to many disciplines. It’s always nice to see a clever reminder of things we “know” but tend to forget in the day to day bustle.

Hi Alex,
What a great analogy. This truly demonstrates the power of effective teamwork. As Henry Ford said:
“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”
Nature has so much to teach us if we would simply take the time to observe and learn.

Hi Alex…thanks for ALL of the QUALITY material you provide! “Honkers and Flappers” represent the ultimate in team work. True story, coaching the baseball team one fall day, I was talking about how important synergy and “teamanship” are to the success of families, teams and corporations. Teams are the fountain from which all our achievements will ultimately flow…in mid sentence a group of geese flew overhead illustrating perfectly my message about teamwork as I was talking about the geese and why certain teams always seem to win. The timing couldn’t have been better. Great clip.
Hi Alex,
I agree with you this movie is great for marketers, like myself and we can learn much from them.
I also agree with Jeff Herring’s comment about your list being a community and not just email addresses.
Especially important is ASKING your community for their feedback. That is why I choose to ask my “community” with my “Manwill Power Hour” Weekly Radio Show. From their input I can teach them more effectively.
Sometimes as a marketer it seems to be more difficult to ask for feedback from your peers than with a total stranger, yet that is where the true learning becomes evident.
I appreciate you alex.

Wow, in 2 minutes, 17 seconds, Saatchi and Saatchi said a lot. They’ve still got the creative touch.
The interesting thing is there is not leader/teacher. Everyone takes turns. Everyone is at the head of the pack. Obviously the young ones need teachers. They need to learn to fly, find food, etc. But in fall when it’s time to fly they are all integral components in the pack. I think this is most instructive and a model of more and more future business.
Thanks for pointing us toward this Alex.

What a poignant clip. I never knew that geese are so supportive of each other! We, humans, sure can learn from them.
Not only is this applicable to Internet marketing, it is also relevant to our lives. Most successful people have a band of “cheerleaders” around them who spur them on and are on hand to lend help.

I was on a familiar road where a family of geese (6 babies and mom) regularly waddled across to the pond each morning. The goslings soon became adults and one particular morning we noticed they were not in their usual spot. Up the road about 10 feet we saw a dead goose in the road. To the right of our car, we saw the family of geese staring at the dead one as if in shock. We felt sad for the family and stopped to move it out of the road. The geese did not budge and we didn’t try to disturb their memorial service. Two hours later, we drove by them again and they had not moved a muscle that we could tell. How long they would remain there we didn’t know, but one thing was for sure, it stuck in our memories as does this video for you Alex.
God’s creatures are not so different after all. We’ll either stand by one another or we won’t. It’s all about having faith in seeing what we can become by being lifted up. Thanks for the post. Make it a faith-filled awesome day!

Now I know why my wings are tired.
I’ve spent a few years flying solo, while writing my novel and learning from your visionary online courses how to host Virtual Book Tours and build my marketing platform.
With my paperback release next month, I’m finally ready to invite fiction readers and singles seeking love to lift each other up as we enjoy a fun novel and create happy relationships with tips inside the novel.
I first heard about online marketing through you. Now a whole new world’s opened up to me. I thank you for giving me my wings, Alex!

I didn’t even have to watch the movie or read the words. Just the music alone perked me up!!! :-) Triple benefits from this movie!
This is a perfect example of the importance of fellowship and why the Bible places such a high value on beleivers gathering togeather to support and help each other. We are called to bear each others burdens. Sometimes we place too much emphasis on the the value of indivigualism
With geese getting such a bad rap for bringing down the USAir plane, it’s great to see this positive reminder.

Thanks Alex!
I’ve been watching geese for the past 6 months, I’m in their daily flight path, and I always wonder why they choose to be in the group they’re with. I should Google it! LOL
One day I saw a lone goose trying to catch up and join others, then he gave up and flew back to try to scramble in with another group. Last I saw of him, he was still lagging, he would have been better off just to slow down a bit and let the ones behind catch up rather than actually turn back.
So that lesson could be: Don’t rush to keep up and get yourself all stressed out, then make a stupid decision that could lead to dropping out all together. Just coast and trust that the next wave will catch up and then you will be strong enough to mesh with it.
I’m a newbie in the TSS class and am already behind. My dad died last week and I’m lagging with the calls and homework because of trying to help my mother during his decline. I’m very happy to report that I’m coasting, relaxing and trusting that I’m not alone, I’ll find my chance to mesh with my market and community, I can feel them coming up behind me!
I love the fact that everything is recorded and available to me, I can go at my own pace. This is the beauty of your program and teleseminars in general, no one gets left behind, it’s always there. You’re brilliant, Alex, I LOVE this class!
I’ll be on the next call…
Randy
Hi Alex, Great Lesson. I search You Tube for videos that will help my club members want to come to Lake Chapala Mexico for a look.
This video as a prior post says is good for my community (members) and as well as for establishing myself as the lead goose.
The synergy of the group is just beginning to happen and I believe this video will help it along.
I also like your idea of checking with the community to see just how many posts they want per week.
Siempre tu amigo (Always your friend), Sid
Thanks for the movie, Alex. There was a lot of food for thought in 2 minutes, and that in itself is a lesson. We are all capable on our own, but, inspiration is always welcome.
Each bird flies free, but, has community sense, as they know their purpose and feel the value they produce within their flock. Each bird fulfilled their purpose, and was able to rest as needed, much as we also need to do.
We are all creation, bird and man, with a specific ability. Without rest, a vision of where we are headed (purpose), and then creating that (whether flying or earning a living) there is no reason to continue. We must have that “gettin there” stimulation to continue.
Thanks again, and have a wonder full day!
Jill Reed
I have been fascinated by birds for years. I watch them gather for group meetings, the leader sitting at the top of a building and the crowd waiting together below on the ground. I watched an event on the water, 2 birds surfing the waves while the crowd watched; then two more surfing in front of the audience. I’ve also watched a bird and her partner create a nest in my window sill.
Thank you for teaching me something I didn’t know about the way birds supporr each other’s flying. I always wondered why they flew in V formations.
And thanks for reminding us of how much we can learn by observing birds – who do it naturally – support each other to succeed.
The number 1 mistake solo entrepreneurs make is thinking that they’re going at it alone. I, personally, would much rather be in a “V” with the occasional “honk” from people who have my interests in mind.

Hi Alex,
Nice post and great reminder of team building. Just make sure your team compliments one another and interacts well.
Thanks for the update.
Hal
We all benefit from community and helping each other along the path. The goose analogy really fits into that, although there could be a fourth lesson, if a honk doesn’t push someone along, perhaps they need a little goose. : )
thanks for sharing
Great clip for training courses. I shall keep it in mind
This is a great message that I’m continually trying to take to heart. We launched a social network for folks who want to turn their ideas into businesses…about two months ago. It’s grown to almost 2,000 already. I really have to work at just serving them and not promoting to them. And keeping them from doing the same. The value is just incredible and I’m blessed to be not just a leader of the community (as Jeff Herring so rightly states), but a part of it.
Great wake up call. Thank you for the fresh perspective on my team, and how we can help one another.
Another example of how humans can learn from the animal kingdom.
Hello Alex,
Awesome video mate, it is always better to work as a team and share the workload, i am in the middle of a coaching program and i have to say that the people that are on the program with me are all like flocks of geese, we have built up are own little community and the help you recieve of your fellow students is awesome, so i suppose for are little community the video is very apt.
Thanks a lot mate and keep up the good work.

Hi Alex,
Thank you for the inspiration and the reminder!
Everyday I give information to people on my stopchronicpain “list”, I always keep at the forefront of my mind that these people trusted me to help them with their problem.
Their problem is chronic pain that they can’t alleviate in their bodies. My purpose is to remember that they are real people, with a very real problem that needs a solution. When I keep this focus, as opposed to trying to sell my products, my emails are richer with information and have a more personal touch.
Like the geese that help the weak one recover, I am dropping back to help others, so I may move forward.

Marketing schmarketing! These are great lessons for life. Very insightful.
Super concepts for business…or FAMILY.
We work with ‘blended families’ nationally. The message in the video is powerful and compelling for those facing this ‘journey’ of life. When faced with the unique circumstances of step-family dynamics, ‘geese’ can provide a lesson.
Thanks for sharing Alex. Saw you on FACEBOOK too. You are everywhere. Will send friend request this hour. :-)

Thank you for connecting us to this video, Alex.
I just came from my Master Mind meeting and together with this video I am reminded once again that as a solo entrepreneur you never need to be alone. There are TONS of networking opportunities out there for all of us. We only need to seek them out and open ourselves to the community.
On this day marking hope and change in our country, I hope we can all remember the value and blessing of sharing, asking for help, and finding others willing to walk — or in this case — fly along side us.
Here’s to lessons all around us, everyday, natural and profound. Thank you, Alex.

Now I understand why I enjoy listening to your classes – again and again. You do such encouraging “honking”! But in a joking manner, I am really being serious.
I also like what Jeff said about being in community. I am coming to the TSS Reunion and looking forward to meeting “old friends” for the first time.

Hi Alex,
What a beautifully timed post. I love the powerful demonstration of well functioning community so effortlessly exhibited by the geese!
We have just witnessed the swearing in of the 44th president of the United States. I am filled with hope and joy to see that we have begun to restore the greatness of our nation and can once again lead by example as an inspiring member of the world community.
As I glimpsed John Lewis in the crowd tears came to my eyes as I thought, “How far we have come from that bloody bridge in Selma to the Washington Mall today.” Indeed we do have a dream.
Love, Godspeed and success to all,

Love this piece of inspiration. “Birds of a feather flock together.” There is a great scripture someone shared with me “Keep seeking for the other’s advantage”. This video reminded me of that.
Thanks!
Alex, This is a great adjunct to your previous video suggestion, “Validation”. Teamwork is the key to any business success even for sole proprietors as you team up with suppliers, outsourcers and of course, customers. Thanks again for the inspiration. Doctor J

Interesting – I came across the 5 lessons from geese applying it to people just the other day on a small website on quotes. I had already incorporated it into my book section on teamwork and now I see further reinforcement here – thanks Alex for sharing. I like the extra perspective for business and entrepreneurs.

Quite a lesson to be learnt from such a short video. Amazing how much we can learn from birds and animals who are created with instinct, while we cloud our ability to make wise decisions with negative thinking. Thanks for the reminder that we need to work together and learn from each other to achieve our desired goals.
Awesome video, Alex. I’m going to share it on Twitter and Facebook giving you credit… you’re amazing.
Thanks for reminding us all what’s really important as we walk the path to success.

Alex,
I love this video! I am working on a big marketing project at the moment and I sent it to everyone on the team! Thanks.
Thanks, Alex,
Some great reminders here, for marketing and for life.
It reminds me very much of road cycling, which is a fantastic sport. There is a set leader who does the hard work for a time, everyone drafting off of him or her, then the lead drops back and another picks up the hard break. Cyclists call out hazards – from potholes, to water, to rocks that can puncture a tire, to cars – for those coming behind them so that accidents and problems are avoided. The group I ride with has a no-drop policy, where no rider is ever allowed to drop behind and get lost from the group, whether slow or injured. We share water, sport nutrition, and give encouragement in various forms all along the way … and we puch ourselves to be better and faster and have fun.
Thanks for the reminders. keep ‘em coming!
Honk on Alex!!!!!

This reminds us all of the importance of our social networks–as marketers and as individuals. It’s also a great reminder that, as Americans, we need to rekindle our sense of community.
Thank you for sharing the term “vendor netwrok”. Your advice is quantum.I always read your words profoundly.

I am so glad that you shared this with me. It is great advice for everyone in the business. Looking forward to more of the good information you keep providing. :)

What I appreciate most about you today, Alex, is that you have created such a fabulous flock.
Your leadership from behind, and your knowledge have created such an incredible system, to allow the rest of us to “get in formation” (hmmmm. “in formation” is awful close to “information”) and make the journey easier.
I literally woke up this morning, and got teary eyed, as I saw results of your teaching starting to work. :)
From the over 3,000 reads of my articles on eZinearticles.com (taught at your repurposing workshop) to an e-mail from my publisher in Australia, letting me know the preview call for the Tele Seminar launched while I was sleeping (my entry for the TSS challenge) http://www.theonecoaching.com, to an order for my Video Dream Board Kit, from South Africa, which was featured on the tele seminar preview call http://yourbestfriendcalled.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3191468 to having 61 registrations for my FREE 21 days of life-coaching videos promotion that I did with Traffic Geyser (one of your list building strategies)www.yourbestfriendcalled.com/videos and I got a new coaching client, yesterday, from handing out postcards :)
It is so exciting, I can hardly stand it!!! Thank you for leading the flock and allowing us little Geese to soar!

Thanks for the wonderful video, Alex. I appreciate being in your caring community.
Nature does have a lot to teach us… if we’ll listen. As our country joins together in a new era of hope with President Obama, it’s most timely to remember that “we’re in this together.”
That video was a helpful inspiration to me in my work in making a difference through multimedia.
Awesome Message!
Jeff,
You’re spot on. I call them my “tribe” and I’m going to be more conscious about calling them my “list” or “subscribers”. It’s more personal to have them feel a part of a “community” as you say … versus a subscriber list.
Thanks for your comment.

It’s interesting you bring up cycling because I was a professional cyclist in the U.S. for 2 years and the pelaton concept is what cyclists learned most from geese.

Bonnie,
What I appreciate most about you is that you “do what you know” :-)
In my experience, “not knowing that you don’t know” is not nearly as tragic as “not doing what you do know.”

Don’t mean to sound cynical, but we should also remember that geese occasionally fly into airplane engines. Lesson: make sure the lead goose has vision, focus and concentration and if it doesn’t, develop leadership skills in the flock and get someone else to take over the lead.
Thanks Alex, for the inspirations.
I’ve three slight variations on the lessons from geese:
1—being in a V formation means there are different roles for each. The leaders will endure more wind resistance. The followers have to trust the leaders’ directions, and the leaders have to trust that the followers will have the leaders’ backs.
2—while the wind drag pushes the followers back into formation, entrepreneurs who are trying something new will experience the same resistance. The key is to have the wisdom to determine whether to get back into formation or strike out with another herd. Then, one has to have the courage to act according to one’s convictions.
3—leaders and followers will change positions at times. Followers need to be patient enough to learn while following, and be prepared to pick up the lead. Leaders will need to humble enough to fall back, and let someone else shine. Leading is a privilege, and it comes with burdens.
Thanks again Alex for both leading us and cheering us on.
I seen this before and it’s great! Such a simple way to look at helping others and being a leader. I also look at geese differently, thier an intelligent bird
Alex, what a way to make a point about teamwork and not going it alone. I see the geese out of my back window everyday and they are really neat to watch. Thanks for the video and I am passing it on!!

This is amazing. Thanks for sharing this. My friend and mentor and bird watching expert, John Robinson (www.onmymountain.com), sent me the link to this article. It blew me away, not only because of the great inspiration, but because of the close similiarity to the parable in my ne book. In it my wife and I talk about our past lives of restriction and feeling stuck with old mindsets and how we changed our way of thinking.
The geese story is used to portray parts of our experiences using the V formation and flying south as analogies for doing things right.
I don’t usually blatently promote my book in someone else’s blog like this, but this is related I just had to.
If anyone would like to help promote it and share in the earnings, just get in touch.
Thanks Alex for sharing this.

Alex,
Thanks so much for sharing this video.
Things have changed from the status quo. It is no longer about doing it alone, but about collaboration and community as the next level of consciousness is reached.
It is about embracing and trusting our capable colleagues and asking for assistance when needed and giving of one’s expertise freely when asked.
Many great lessons. I look forward to watching again and sharing this with others.
Much love and aloha,

Alex,
This is awesome! I’m eager to share this with my tribe. Thank you for calling our attention to it. Sometimes the simplest things can carry the greatest messages. There are leadership books out there that don’t say as much as this short video. Thanks so much.
Peace & Greetings Alex, My Brother,
In the Scouting Movement we’ve passed this Story of the Geese down through the ages. With each new Trooper (and Big Kids, too~The Parents),I watch as this piece of Indian Lore is told by a senior Scout to the Tenderfoots and Webelos. It’s a precursor to hopfully Years of Leadership Training to the Eagle’s Nest! A tough piece of reasoning for an 11 year old, so we sell the concept with this story. Many of our bouys have only recently been pried off their Momma’s couch, so this Video in the Church Basement, supplemented by Oral traditions, will help us with our Life MISSION: Turning Boys to MEN~With a capital M!

This video is great! From now on I will not look at Geese in the same way. If only we, who are in the marketing/selling business would use the strategy of the lowly Geese in creating teamwork, our successes would be tremendous. Alex, I can’t thank you enough for this analogy. Have a great day!
