TWITTER: No One Cares?
Could it be true? Nobody cares about what you “tweet” about on Twitter?
Yes, it could be true.
IF you are just blathering uninteresting stuff about your life and not interacting with anyone.
IF you are DMing people with your latest “Mafia Wars” news (do you even HAVE a life?) or giving someone a gift of “Corona” and demanding a gift back (truly bad form).
It’s sad too, because your could be using your Twitter platform to make a difference in the lives of those who want and need to learn from you.
So then the question becomes “Just what do we tweet about then, Jeff?”
I’m glad you asked. I’ve got a new article all about what to tweet about. Here’s a hint: It’s all about tweeting about LIFE!
Click here to give it a read. The article will pop up in a new window. After you read it, I would like for you to do at least 3 things:
1) Click on the links in the Resource Box so you can get our FREE 4 Part Video Training Series from The Social Marketing Blueprint
2) Leave your comments here on Alex’s blog (gets you a backlink from a top rated blog, and you get to join in the conversation)
3) Go Use This Stuff!

Jeff,
That’s a short and sweet lesson on Tweeting! Many small business people who get on board Twitter face this issue. They struggle what to write or tweet and how to leverage the social media tool for their business. Thanks for the goodies!
You may be right that no one cares but how do you explain millions of people using twitter and face book.
Just because you don’t care that doesn’t mean no one else cares.
But you may be right I should not waste the twitter time with news snippets or useless babel.
Jeff,
Agree the LIFE model is a great road map for success Twitter, Facebook etc.
Plus we would add anything COOL as people love cool stuff too to explore.

This is exactly what I thought when I first got on twitter… “who cares what I’m doing right now?!?!”
So I let my twitter account lie stagnant for over 6 months. Finally, @JeffHerring followed me and showed me what to do and now I use twitter for:
1) market research (Alex’s Ask Method)
2) free event lead generation & list building (webinars & of course, Teleseminars!)
3) testimonials (just go to http://twitter.com/MaritzaParra/favorites to see what I mean)
4) Turn prospects into customers and have them pay me in ADVANCE to create the product they want & need
5) Find like minded people to affiliate with, joint venture with, mastermind with and who have become close & dear friends…
Some people may still not care about twitter and the tool it has become to make your business and life better, but
I.Do.Care.
:)
PS Can’t wait for another year of fabulous, uplifting and info-packed Alex content during the TSS reunion!
Can’t watch the video with this awful connection I have at the mo – it’s not loading up well :(
I’m learning slowly though. I still see tweets and think “whats the point?” I am really not interested in who’s tweeting what in the bathroom. Similarly, I am quite a private person (honest!) and don’t want everyone knowing what I am up to every minute of the day.
Obviously I have been missing the point – will try the tips and advice tweets that you suggested.

Twitter can be overwhelming if you don’t set up your own personal system for using it. I think this is where the “Who cares?” notion comes from. But as we have all learned, people will do business with those they know, like and trust. So by posting about personal stories (the stuff you think no one cares about) you are actually showing a different side of yourself..and people respond to that! It is no wonder so many job seekers find jobs through Twitter and other social media. Others already “know” them through their regular Tweets..so when they start posting about needing a job, it is easier to find one because they have an established network. This is what I teach my own clients as a resume and interview consultant.
great comments and post! I have done as you suggested Jeff and will watch the video’s tomorrow.
I love your comment Maritza & I would love to learn and do some JV’s with you.
As far as twitter goes…yes…I was new once upon a time too…and I tell my client’s Social Media..is about being …uh social! lol
To me it’s not just about your Following, but how you are Connecting…whether it’s FB, Twitter…etc…
Here is my twitter id http://www.twitter.com/jodymal & yes I follow you back..but even more important…I @people who are interesting, funny and have worthwhile stuff to say!!!

and I’m happy to RT this post!!!!!
Just gave a seminar today: Twitter 101 for the Beginning Tweeter. Jeff’s question is the foremost question on the minds of Twitter newbies and Twitter “maybes” – people just thinking about jumping onto Twitter. Another way to phrase it is: If I tweet about my life . . . “What’s can Twitter do for me?”
Achieving a good result for yourself on Twitter is dependent upon your answer to the question: “How can I be of service to others?”
By making this question the focus of each of your tweets, coming up with good topics for tweeting becomes easy!
Share tidbits of helpful, interesting, insightful, wise, new and even humorous information in your area(s) of expertise and interest. Do that and people will naturally follow you.
Throw in the occasional tweet about something of interest happening in your personal life, a personal observation or current event of interest in your local area and you have the basis for creating your personal brand on Twitter.
So where does the marketing part come in? For an answer to that question, I invite you to read my article “When is an Ad Not an Ad?” at http://theNAE.org.
Thanks, for starting this conversation!
I know, I know… there are those who dislike Twitter. But there are those who dislike PB&J too.
Being a HUGE fan, user and advocate of Twitter, I felt it was my duty to respond.
True: no one cares if all you do is DM spam or only advertise about yourself. Twitter is about connecting and letting people get to know you, while you, in turn, get to know them.
Twitter has become my #1 source of referral links to my blog and website. I go there for tech support, advice, to share, to chat and to LAUGH!
People do care and here’s a tweet I got 10 mins. ago to prove it:
@ArtistTaraReed You are always so sunshine-y! Love it! :D
That made my day! So be yourself, help others, share, and your Twitter friends will be there when you need them!
Tara Reed

Paddu – You said in your comment “That’s a short and sweet lesson on Tweeting!”
That was really not my intention, but you are right…thank you so much for noticing. And to think the whole thing started when I noticed a t-shirt in a department store…who knew?
Bonus tip for all – that is how I get many of my blog posts, when I notice something out in the world and turn it into a “marketing lesson from the road.” See http://ow.ly/Thbd for an example.
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
Fatcat – I think you are missing my point…Twitter is a great resource when used properly. When not used properly you become ignored. Check out the article and the tips for tweeting about LIFE to see just how much I believe in Twitter or follow me at http://JeffonTwitter.com
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
Pat & Lorna – I think we must come up with some kind of t-shirt that says “Social Marketing: LIFE is COOL!”
Whaddya think?
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you two.
Jeff
Maritza – I like the creativity you bring to Twitter, especially the Twitter surveys…
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
Hi Jan – Sorry you can’t catch the video at the moment – keep trying, plus some of the info will come in text & audio as well when you sign up.
Lots of “private people” have found the LIFE Model something they could comfortably use. I’m so glad you are going to give it a try.
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
Sherry – What an incredible use for Twitter and all Social Marketing – to let your network know you are looking for a job. We may want to interview you at some point about this strategy.
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
Jody – you are so right! It’s all about how you are connecting…My good friend and colleague Mari Smith says “If Content is King, then Connection is Queen” and she, and you, are so right.
Thanks for connecting here, and for RTing this post!
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
Linda – and thank you for your great contribution to this conversation. I look forward to working together in 2010!
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
Tara – I have an important question for you at the end of this my comments…
But first, I’d like to hear more about how Twitter has become the #1 source of referral links to your blog and website – we will probably want to interview you.
Now the important question: Are there really people out there who do not like PBJ?
The horror…
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you.
Jeff
The article mentioned is terrific; and that not a comment I make very often. In just a few words, you can see how to add good content in a memorable way. I recommend that you study it’s structure and then put that design into practice in your own articles. Oh, and btw don’t forget to do what Jeff suggests.
Cheers, Bruce
Bruce – Thanks Bruce, I appreciate your comment, and am honored.
Cheers back!
Jeff
Nice article Jeff! I follow this advice regularly.
Just noticed a typo in item I “deliver information about your experts”, should be ‘expertise’ :)
Will
Interesting article and certainly relevant. I use Twitter for our website marketing and we are slowly building a following. We offer occasional Twitter only discounts and some tidbits here and there and it seems to be working. We don’t inundate people and they don’t unfollow us!
Jeff, I’d love to do an interview about job searching and tweeting. Just let me know when! :)
You mentioned t-shirts and then I thought..wouldn’t it be interesting if entrepreneurs got t-shirts made up that just had their Twitter info on the front or back? What do you guys think? Would it work? Not sure if this has already been done but it has me thinking.
I think the biggest mindset change actually happened when I realized how I use Facebook on a personal level. Before I started my company, I just left status updates about life in general. I realized that even after you start a business, you have to approach social media in the same way..a nice blend of sharing personal and business with a little promotion mixed in once in a while.
I would add that I think that Twitter is losing its effectiveness as more and more people join – It seems that there not many conversations going on anymore just plug after plug – I think people are growing tired of Twitter and using other sites as it becomes more spam versus conversation
Mike
Hi Jeff and Maritza:
Like a lot of people, when I first heard about Twitter I thought it was the dumbest things I had ever encountered. How could I possibly care if a complete stranger is going to the mall to buy groceries. It’s nice, but I don’t care.
And I still find tweets about very personal matters by complete strangers to be a waste of everyone’s time – and I really believe that the creators of Twitter thought that these kinds of tweets would only be shared among friends who actually do care about the minutiae of each other’s lives.
I was also told at the beginning that any form of blatant self-promotion was extremely bad form and that the idea was to form relationships and then, after a while, to promote whatever product or service you might have to offer. I believe that that, too, is nonsense, and somewhat deceptive.
i am perfectly happy to find out what people have to offer – products or services they have to sell or give away. When I want to socialize, I see my friends.
I wrote a book that can really help anyone who is starting a small business for the first time – not a home-based business – a bricks and mortar business.
It’s called “Don’t Let Your Dream Business Turn into a Nightmare”, and you can find out more about it at http://www.mybusinessnightmare.com.
My book can help you.

Thanks for all the helpful information. I wish everyone would read this. I get so tired of games, gifts, & meaningless quizzes. I’m going to block or unfriend everyone who sends me these time-wasting applications.!
I enjoy and appreciate the tweets that let me see someone’s personality.
Ann Bell
Thanks Jeff and Alex – this a great resource for my clients – I will pass on the information. Please continure to post value added material like this.
there used to be a button on facebook that allowed you to block certain applications – has anyone else noticed it is gone –

Hi Jeff – great list and good advice especially for those new to Twitter. I am really enjoying being part of your Article Marketing club.
By the way, I created a short very funny video about Twitter. Even thought it is funny, it has a great marketing message as well which fits with what you have said in this post. You can check it out at:

Thanks for everything Jeff.

Since I have been tweeting regularly, I have seen my stats double!Twitter and Facebook can help your business!
As always, Jeff Herring is passing on sage advice yet lays it out in a simple format. This is the proverbial kick in the rear I needed to weave Twitter back into my social marketing.
Kim
Great insights, Jeff
I’ve also realized your twitter issues are your life issues. If your tweets are mundane, if you constantly sell without creating a relationship, if you give gifts nobody wants and demand gifts in return, do you wonder why you’re not happy in life or love?
The antidote?
Change your tweets to change your life!

Excellent article on being interesting and relevant on Twitter. I find that people like the pictures of my cats and funny anecdotes as much as they like the resources on storytelling or how to write a book.
How does one secure a guest post on this blog?
Warmly,
The Story Lady
Jeff, The L I F E model is an easy-to-remember guide, thank you.
I love finding quotes on Twitter – sometimes they come at the exact right moment to inspire me. However I tend to UN-follow people who have some kind of running quote feed, never commenting or adding original value (not even telling what they had for breakfast)!
So as long as people follow your advice, in a BALANCED way, their Twitter fun and results should skyrocket.
Going to* Use * This * Stuff,
Anita
Have been following Jeff and Alex and I’m realizing more and more that the stuff the teach is not only inspiring but great!
Interaction on Twitter is definitely key! I also like to take a quick look at the most recent twitter streams of someone new I am following in my niche. Then I do a RT of a blog post or event that they tweeted. It just shows that I care, am willing to help and gives them to take a second look at me among their many new followers – I hope.
I love tweeting quotes too. I just happen to really like quotes and also quotes get Retweeted more I think.
Kim – Consider yourself “proverbially kicked!”
Thanks, I appreciate your comments.
Jeff
The article is good but somewhat too brief. I was expecting a more detailed article with lot more of information.
Here are some more tweets that could help
* Interesting information about your city/country
* Opinion on some burning current issue. I had some good traffic when I talked about global warming during the Copenhagen meet.
* Useful free content websites

Twitter is a one-of-a-kind opportunity in many ways. After almost a year it is still a serious challenge for me. I enjoy providing valuable content in my tweets as well as quotes. Content takes time but well worth it. I like to give others what I would like to receive-content-items of interest etc.
There are things I would like to see changed about Twitter but hey, we’re only passengers on this train.
Appreciated your article-a great reminder.
All the best……
Bill
Wow! Lots of great tips. I think one thing I forget to do is share the things I like, not just the information about my stores and what I am promoting. I always am checking out cool new blogs, shops on Etsy, Ning networks, etc. and I should be sharing these with others! What do you think about the twitter follower services out there? They seem to get you tons of followers, but is any follower better than none? Like twitter friends?
As usual Jeff you provide excellent information.
I too thought “who cares” in the beginning and let my account sit dormant.
Thanks to some great teachers, including Jeff Herring I have learned how to use the tool and teach other baby boomers how to do the same.
I have found thru interacting with tons o’ people who are starting their own home based business that they just “don’t get” this whole social media thing. Because I was there in the beginning I find I really enjoy teaching this topic to other baby boomers.
tks

Great Tweeting Tips!
With the majority of Tweets being affiliate links, it’s nice to have something else to offer my followers. I am always finding new and interesting info on the web and never thought to share it on Twitter. Thanks!
Marty
Hey Jeff and Alex and crowd …. of happy followers
I tried using Twitter and no one did care… and I fast lost interests in the ramblings that I saw… there are others that I know are there but they are also the mentors that I am on their lists… so I get their messages first hand; thanks Jeff, et al…
Life got so bogged down with stuff that I am sure no one cares to hear about I shut up, backed away … to deal with my own life. As a life coach… sometimes refueling the tank is the best fuel for what’s next… I am waiting for the fog to clear so that I can bring mo better stuff… to those in need of support, inspiration and wisdom… boy I wish I knew I was smart enough to provide such service.
Thanks… for all you each do… keep doing it.

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you!

Thanks Carla for your kind words…

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you!

Another good acronym to keep your tweets interesting is EIEIO: Entertaining, Inspiring, Educational, Informative and (sometimes) Outrageous.
I often use bit.ly to track clicks which vary with each tweet but I don’t send people always to my own site. So the traffic is broken up to different places, my blog, youtube, other blogs, websites, etc. But to me it’s also about building good will and presenting myself as an authority.
I appreciate you too!
PS. Alex should add a ’subscribe to comments’ feature (eg. wordpress plugin, etc) so we can be notified of future comments to get us to come back more often :)
As usual Jeff, you are right on target. Excellent. It is so important to besociable first and not “push” “push” all the time.
As always great and right on target. Must be ’sociable” first and build a realtionship. Thanks for all you put out here for us.
Nice post, but a bit short. I’ve noticed more of a difference in my stats when I’m replying and retweeting than just letting articles and whatnot autotweet, so being active on twitter definitely does seem to make a difference in the response you get/traffic.
I just have a hard time following anything going on on twitter…this morning I found out from twitter that one of my favorite baseball players as a kid was inducted into hall of fame, so it was interesting to watch the different tweets regarding that.
I guess the point I’m making is that while twitter seems to be a major pain in general, it really does have some good points to it, and it does seem to be working for traffic, at least a little bit.
Great advice from you, Jeff and many of the other commenters! It’s like cold-calling, be the best call someone gets all day!
I agree with the article. Very good information. I receive a lot of follows and usually follow back, except when I see that all people are saying is – go here to make money online! You are right, tweet about life, about inspiration about things that people are interested in. It’s called SOCIAL media. You might like to see what this guy from Chicago is doing with social media. WOW!

As in life, Jeff’s LIFE model for Twitter requires a strategic perspective to gain its full power & marketing potential. That’s why we need great teachers & mentors like Jeff, Maritza & Alex to slash through the wilderness of possibilities and lead us to the ‘Promised Land’!
Thanks for the leadership, guys!
Anything in life that is to prosper needs TLC, Twitter is no different.
Thank you for showing people the way, Jeff and Alex.
The points are well made, Jeff.
Twitter has definitely become part of your life. As Jeff brings out, life is about building relationships and that is exactly how you must treat Twitter.
Twitter is my second favorite social networking. It will bring me more traffic to my website to other people. I will follow the above step to do it , have a try to figure out the great results.
Thanks for the Twitter how-to. Quite informative as usual. Great way to share our message to help others and at the same time being sociable.
Thanks Jeff for the continued commonsense about Twitter. As a reserved Brit I wouldn’t be comfortable about sharing all aspects of my life. But I do see Twitter as a means of building up influence and reliability as someone who cares about how struggling writers are doing.
Great post, Jeff! :)

Thanks Jeff and Maritza for more commonsense info. I enjoy Twitter and have “met” some interesting people. It’s a great way to update people about the content on my website and those who are interested click through and visit.
Great post Jeff!
I am so glad that I “stumbled upon” you and Alex. I participated in the teleseminar Alex gave last week to his chiropractic clients. This event has whipped me up into an information whirlwind in the social media world. I’ve been in the software industry for 20-years and I’ve never seen anything move this quickly.
I made what might have been a mistake and created a handful of Twitter accounts. I’ve honed things down to two:
http://twitter.com/dockmastersoft (Business)
http://twitter.com/camcollins (Fun and Web Projects)
I’d be curious to know how you or your readers feel about trying to manage multiple accounts. I guess if they serve different purposes it’s Ok.
Best,
Cam
@camcollins
I second what everyone else said above about the great, memorable tip! Thanks Jeff for paving the way for the rest of us to have an easier time following!
LIFE – love it! Do we remember what life was like pre-Twitter?
For me Twitter is opportunity.
Opportunity to reach more people with greater velocity.

Thanks again.
I love the way you get right to the point and tell like it is. Very applicable to all sorts of social media marketing. Thanks Jeff!
it’s nice to have something else to offer my followers. I am always finding new and interesting info on the web and never thought to share it on Twitter. Thanks!
Jeff,
I’m always a sucker for acronyms, since they help me remember lists better. LOL But by far what I got out of your resource box was your 7 laws video. The clarity you brought to my thinking about connection and social media is amazing. Thank you!

P.S. – Looking forward to meeting you in person at NAMS!
Great article!
It truly is all about connecting and building relationships-not just on twitter but that same idea can be applied anywhere in life. I look at those I “tweet” with as if I were speaking with them face to face-if few people would want to listen about your business and nothing else in person, why would it be any different on twitter?!
Thanks for a great read,

That is exactly what people needs to know. Tweeting does not absolutely have to revolve around business. Socializing means just that. Getting to know your neighbor on this great big planet.
Hi,
I think of your :Think – Play’ Matrix is very self explanatory. The whole concept and the graphic is simply brilliant. i do not understand why someone could posibly feel ofended. Maybe those that objected it, are those that have problem with the true.
I my self fall in the category of “Think big/Play small. that is my reality No excuses here. Very thoughtful of you.

Jeff,
I never stop learning from you (and now Maritza – the dynamic duo.) I, too, love acronyms, they make recall and action so much easier.

I just recently signed up for twitter and had no clue what to use it for. I really appreciate the advice to help me use it in a way that makes sense, helps my business goals, is fun, and does not make me look like a total dork.
I thought this article was great, and very helpful especially to people who are new to Twitter. I got onto Twitter in August of last year, and since then, have grown to appreciate it more and more. One of the things I find most fascinating about it are all the positive thoughts and quotes constantly circulating. Since what we think about expands, I am all for having positive things to think about during my day because it helps everyone. I enjoy seeing tweets about good things and hearing about people making a difference. I also enjoy seeing people marketing something that they love, a product they have created, an article they have written and so forth.
I have made some really wonderful connections with people I would have otherwise never met which has been so valuable. I have even had telephone conversations with a handful of people about their businesses, their lives, and have created some new friendships. Twitter is all about relationship building. It’s just like dating, you just slow down, get to know a person that you resonate with, and begin a friendship. Who knows what types of opportunities will come of it.
As far as content, I really enjoy finding “gems” that people would otherwise not usually see, like information about dreams from obscure sites that are not commonplace and things like that. I recently held a teleseminar in which many of my callers were from twitter, and not existing customers.
So again, thanks for the article. My twitter account is http://www.twitter.com/bambicorso.
Yasmina,
I’m grateful for your comment and thank you for commenting. Thinking Big/Playing Small is wasting potential and so for those who buy-in to the validity of this simple model, know that going from TB-PS to TB-PB is the greatest of Quadrant shifts … at least it is for me.
Thanks for sharing,

Do you think an expanded version would make a good info product?
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you!
Jeff
Very interesting stuff. Thanks.
Thanks Alex, this is VERY practical information which is applicable to most social media sites. I myself have learned from this article, that I must lighten up while working on-line, which I must from now on practice everyday.
I enjoyed this very much!
Are there other versions of this available that I’ll purchase?
One of my major Twitter pet-peeves is when people you choose to follow DM you marketing materials…it’s tacky and shouldn’t be done. A simple thanks is fine. I do appreciate intelligent linking though from Twitter and interesting facts. When people take it too far and become too banal, I turn them off.
Stephen Nash.
Another great post!
Thanks for more great tips! I always get just the gems I need from you. You rock!
Are there other versions of this available that I’ll purchase?
Thanks for posting this, lifted my day.
