Entrepreneurial “Idiot” or “Mystic?” – You Judge…

I recently read Robert Shemin’s new book in one sitting on a flight to Vancouver, BC.

It’s titled, “How come THAT idiot’s rich and I’m Not?” and although he writes that the “idiot” in him made him wealthy (on page 21), if you get and read his book, you my feel he’s more of an entrepreneurial “mystic” of sorts.

“Cogito, ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”) is the philosophical statement first delcared by René Descartes, which soon became one of the most foundational elements in Western philosophy.

According to Wikipedia, the meaning of the phrase is that if someone wonders if he or she exists, that is in and of itself proof of existance..

All philosophy aside, in my view Descartes’ “Verb” was to “Think” and “thinking” is how Descartes defined his existance … it’s what he did to define himself.

During the past year, I’ve asked thousands of my students and colleagues this same question (“What is your Verb?”) and many of the answers I’ve heard have astonished me.

Why Dive at the “Rocks” and NOT the Water?

Remember those old Wide World of Sports specials on Saturday afternoons?

One of my favorite events was the Acapulco cliff divers. These guys would scale a steep, rocky, cliff side about 120 feet in the air and then perform beautiful “swan dives” into the crashing surf below.

Before each dive, the divers watch the surf below rise and fall…rise and fall…rise and fall…sometimes for several minutes before taking their leap of faith. They have to time their jumps perfectly to hit the water at the precise moment the surf is at its highest point.
