The 3 Responsibilities of a Thought Leader

Marketing, ResponsibilityA clear and simple definition of Responsibility is: “The ability to respond.”

What separates thought leaders in professional fields such as: marketing, academic, business training, spirituality, philosophy (or any other discipline you can think of ) is their ability to respond to uncertainty.

Amateurs react. Professionals respond.

After 17+ memorablem years of teaching direct marketing strategies to work-at-home entrepreneurs, best-selling authors, professional speakers and corporate giants such as Sams Club, I’ve observed that world-class professionals are defined by 3 core responsibilities.

If you want to become a social influencer or thought leader in your area of expertise, these 3 responsibilities can expand your public authority online and offline with reliable certainty.

Responsibility #1:  Define Reality.

I learned this from Max De Pree, former CEO of Herman Miller and best-selling author of Leadership Is an Art.  Max says, “The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the two, the leader must become a servant and a debtor.”

I agree. And I also know [Read more…]

Are You an Inventor Or Improver in Your Business?

“Never invent, always improve.”

This four-word sentence is indelibly etched in my mind right now. I also have that quote framed and hanging on the wall of my home office.

The marketing philosophy of choosing improvement over invention has generated millions of dollars for my info publishing business and my students’ businesses.

Although the idea of becoming an “Improver” is not as sexy as being known as an “Inventor,” it is improvement, not invention, that has generated billions for some of the most renowned Thought Leaders in history. Ironically, many of these folks have been inaccurately dubbed as “Inventors.”

Here’s one example: Nikola Tesla invented the modern alternating current electric power (AC) systems. Thomas Edison improved it. Telsa died broke. Edison died a millionaire.

Here’s another: Charles Haanel is the true “father of personal development” in my opinion. He invented The Master Key System, yet he died in obscurity acknowledged by only a few loyal followers. [Read more…]

“Outer Circle Marketing” Target Exposed

bow-and-arrowPicture yourself with a bow and quiver full of arrows.  You aim at one of the five circles or rings on your target that graduate inward from WHITE to BLACK to BLUE to RED and finally, YELLOW.

The biggest outer circle is WHITE and directly surrounds the smaller BLACK ring closer to the middle.  (Please refer to the picture to the left to see the five colored rings).

The BLACK circle surrounds a smaller BLUE circle, which in turn, surrounds an even smaller RED circle.  That RED circle surrounds the fifth circle which is YELLOW and in the center of the target known as the “bull’s-eye.”

Why am I telling you this?

I’m telling you this because it is a useful analogy of how your prospects take aim at your marketing offers, whether they want to become first-time customers or multi-buyers.

The way I see it, the WHITE outermost ring represents your “get-to-know-you” offer such as a free Teleseminar, eBook, audio eCourse or video.

This is your opt-in email offer.  To continue the analogy, it is that defining moment when a new prospect has successfully hit your target by aiming and shooting their imaginary arrow at your outermost WHITE circle.

“Outer Circle Marketing” is Time-Tested: Please realize that what I’m talking about here is not just another clever marketing analogy that’s untested.  It is tested and it is time-proven.

OCM = “Outer Circle Marketing” and that’s also the formal name I’ve given to this new breakthrough strategy.  If you want to experience it first hand, join my AskAlexToday Teleseminars scheduled on the first Thursday of each month.

I’ve utilized OCM for the past 2 years with [Read more…]

Survey Results: Readers Want 2 Posts Per Week

nope-image.jpgOn December 30th, 2008 I posted a survey so my readers could decide if 3 posts per week would be better than 2 posts per week.

Over 320 readers voted and the final tally I took revealed 202 – NO votes compared to 119 – YES votes.  The Blog Dialogue survey result was a WIN-WIN for me because I get do less work and serve more of my readers.

Starts Immediately: So as of Thursday, January 8th, my blogging editorial calendar will 2 posts per week that show up every Thursday and Tuesday (every week in 2009) at precisely 8:44am Eastern.

One of my core premises is: “People support what they help to create.”  And thesimplest way to get support is to “Ask.” That sounds simple, but it’s not easy.

The”Ask Principle” is what the Greek Philosopher, Socrates discovered nearly 2,500 years ago, which is now known as the The Socratic Method.  It is what Gandhi insinuated when he said, “In order to G-E-T you must first A-S-K.”

And it is what George Gallup did for most of his professional life – assessing public opinion on political, social, and economic issues, including the hopes and fears of people around the globe, their leisure-time activities, their morals, beliefs, etc.

What To Do Now: In 2009, I want you visit and revisit this blog on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  When you do, you’ll see a new blog post that appears at precisely 8:44am Eastern.

It may seem silly to you, but for me, having that level of consistent precision (Tuesdays, Thursdays at 8:44am Eastern) makes me more predictable to you.  And predictability typically leads to Trust.

What is your VERB?

descartesweb.jpg“Cogito, ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”) is the philosophical statement first delcared by René Descartes, which soon became one of the most foundational elements in Western philosophy.

According to Wikipedia, the meaning of the phrase is that if someone wonders if he or she exists, that is in and of itself proof of existance..

All philosophy aside, in my view Descartes’ “Verb” was to “Think” and “thinking” is how Descartes defined his existance … it’s what he did to define himself.

During the past year, I’ve asked thousands of my students and colleagues this same question (“What is your Verb?”) and many of the answers I’ve heard have astonished me.

For instance, my literary agent Bonnie Solow says [Read more…]
